A man killed two policewomen and a bystander in the Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday before being shot dead in a gunbattle at a school in what prosecutors are treating as a terrorist attack.

The man was named by public broadcaster RTBF as a 36-year-old petty criminal who had been let out on day-release from a local prison on Monday. It said investigators were looking into whether he had converted to Islam and been radicalized in jail.

Gunshots fired in Belgium

A public prosecutor told a news conference that the man attacked the policewomen from behind with a knife, described as a box-cutter by RTBF, around 10:30 am (4.30 am ET) on a boulevard in the center of Belgium’s third city, near the German border. After stabbing the officers, prosecutor Philippe Dulieu said, the man seized one of their handguns and shot both women dead before walking down the street and shooting dead a 22-year-old man who was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car.The man then made his way into a high school where he took a woman employee hostage, triggering a major intervention by armed police. Pupils were moved to safety as a gunbattle broke out that sent people in the street racing for cover. Several police were wounded before the attacker was finally killed.“The event is classed as a terrorist incident,” Dulieu said.

No surprise here. “War is deceit,” said Muhammad. Ramadan was denied bail, so his lawyers attempted a subterfuge of ill-health to get him sprung. If he is released eventually on whatever pretext, he will likely leave France and get himself beyond the reach of the law.

In 2018 the ISIS fight will shift into a deadly new phase

Report: ISIS militants moving to remote deserts

Greg Palkot reports on international headlines.

America and our allies have made major progress against ISIS and other radical Islamic terrorists this year, but as we head toward 2018 the battle against these murderers is shifting into a new phase. Unfortunately, the terrorists are far from being eliminated.

ISIS – which stands for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria – lost most of the territory it controlled in those countries this year, making a mockery of its claim to be a “state.” The liberation of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria, with the help of U.S. military advisers and air bombardments, sent ISIS fighters fleeing like rats from a sinking ship.

EUROPE

Salafists hold Western society in contempt and accuse it of consisting of "pornography, naturist and swingers clubs;" their recruitment techniques are becoming more and more sophisticated, former German Salafist Dominic Schmitz, author of a book on life as a German Islamist, told Sputnik Deutschland.

The ranks of Salafists in Germany have swollen in recent years as an increasing number of young Germans turn to radical Islam. The Bundesamt fuer Verfassungsschutz (BfV), Germany's domestic intelligence service, is aware of 10,300 Salafists; in 2011 the authorities were aware of 3,800 Salafist followers.

Dominic Schmitz is one such person. He turned to radical Islam in the early 2000s, when he was 17 years old. He has now left the organization and written a book about his experiences called "I was a Salafist" (Ich war ein Salafist).

Is Al-Azhar University a Global Security Threat?

Al-Azhar University, the world’s largest Sunni Islamic educational institution, is where many of the world’s most brutal terrorists received their formal religious training. This is to be expected, given the nature of the material taught there. Al-Azhar has thousands of affiliated mosques, schools, learning centers, and universities around the world, such as the Islamic American University in Michigan. The institution has also been unofficially controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood for decades.
