Male doctors may not be allowed to treat female patients

MANAMA — Male physicians and nurses can't treat female patients according to a parliamentary proposal approved on Tuesday by the parliament.

If the government backs the proposal, the Ministry of Health will be badly affected, especially with its shortage of medical teams.

The largest bloc in the parliament (Al Wefaq) tabled the proposal that was supported by majority of the house.The proposal bans also female physicians from treating male patients and stresses that all manpower in the gynecology section should be females. The proposal forbids medical team from examining dead bodies of opposite sex.Al Wefaq defended its decision by highlighting that Bahrain is an Islamic country that should protect religious principles.   

The government obliges its effort to eliminate gender discrimination in all aspects in life, especially in employment.
