He told a pen pal that Sheikh Khalid Yasin’s lectures made him convert to Islam after showing him “the purpose of life”.

Adeboawale, 22, and Michael Adebolajo, 29, are awaiting sentencing for the brutal murder of Fusilier Lee Rigby in May this year.

The pair traveled to Woolwich Barracks in south London and attempted to behead the soldier as he crossed the road wearing a Help for Heroes hoodie.

Adebowale said he had received little support from fellow Muslims who judged his appalling crimes, reported The Mirror.

Adebowale, who is in Belmarsh Prison, wrote: “The trial has now come to an end and me and my brother in Islam are awaiting till next year as the case was adjourned for sentencing.

“May Allah bless you for your dua’s [prayers]. I have had little support as you can imagine, many people are shocked and many Muslims sadly ill-judged me, but Allah must ‘aan [Allah help them].”

Yasin’s strict take on Islam has been linked to the Wahhabi branch of the religion.

DVDs of his speeches have been used to recruit young Brits to fight for the Taliban – who he describes as “Our brothers”.

He once said: The delusion of equality of women is foolishness... there is no such thing", and has been recorded as backing the death penalty for gay people.

Adebowale converted to Islam in 2009 after learning more about the religion.

He wrote in the letter, thought to be his first since being convicted, that a mixture of being spiritual and exposure to Islam made his decision.

He said: “The more I learnt the more interested I became which led to me listening to a lecture by Sheikh Khaalid Yaseen.

The title of this lecture is called 'What is the Purpose of Life?' After hearing this I had to conclude that the purpose of life is to acknowledge and worship the creator.”

Adebolawe suffered psychotic episodes since the murder and may spend his sentence in Broadmoor psychiatric unit.

Both Adebolawe and Abebolajo are followers of extremist cleric Anjem Choudary
